In some cases of insomnia, a medication called Trazodone may be prescribed by primary care physician; especially if your insomnia is caused by chronic pain or if you have problems with what is known as restless leg syndrome.

There are over 80 different types of sleep disorders. Insomnia is the most commonly reported one.

Insomnia simply describes a condition where a person can have problems falling asleep or has trouble staying asleep. Patients will describe that they often turn and toss all night or remember being awake during the night.

Insomniacs typically complain of being unable to close their eyes or just “rest their mind” for more than a few minutes at a time. Insomnia can be caused by emotions, medications, herbs, too much caffeine, and other there is no immediate apparent reason. An over imaginative mind as well as physical pain can also be causes. Finding the underlying cause of insomnia is necessary to cure it.

Restless Legs Syndrome is a neurological disorder causing tingly, uncomfortable or crawling sensations in your legs, which causes enough discomfort that you may have an uncontrollable urge to keep moving your legs. RLS is not only limited to your sleep time but anytime when you are resting. Discomfort tends to increase when sitting or lying down and during the evening or night. There is increased discomfort in different positions and at different times of the day.

The most commonly used class of drugs prescribed for insomnia includes drugs such as diazepam, and lorazepam.

New drugs for sleep on the market are drugs such as Ambien and Lunesta. These drugs have fewer side effects than benzodiazepines but do appear to cause psychological dependence and physical dependence. So, don’t believe every commercial you see on TV.

There are OTC sleep aids, many of these sleep aids use the antihistamine diphenhydramine. The effectiveness of these aids often decreases over time and next-day sleepiness is common.

Sleep medicine is a fairly new medical subspecialty. Physicians who work in sleep medicine help those patients who have problems in sleeping well. Sleep specialists can detect and treat rare as well as common sleep disorders or illnesses. Some sleep disorders include insomnia, sleepwalking, jet lag, snoring as well as sleep apnea

Anytime Trazone is used for any condition, it is well to remember how very addictive it is.

Do you have problems with insomnia? Have you tried a white noise machine or some soft music? These are two of many tips you might hear from a medical professional to help with any sleep problems.

Because of the number of people suffering with sleep problems, sleep medicine has become a recognized medical subspecialty. These are doctors who work only in sleep medicine and help people who are unable to sleep well. Sleep doctors are able to find and treat both common and rare sleep disorders. Some common sleep disorders are insomnia, jet lag, snoring and sleep apnea.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) has a mission statement to assure that people with sleep problems get the best medical care. The AASM accredits centers and labs that treat people who have sleep problems. In 1977 the AASM accredited the first sleep disorders center. In addition, the AASM certifies behavioral sleep medicine (BSM) specialists.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which a person has chronic problems with falling asleep, problems staying asleep or an irregular sleep pattern where they sleep for several hours and then awake unable to fall back to sleep. It is typically followed by functional impairment while awake.

Sleep hygiene consists of basic habits that help you develop a pattern of healthy sleep. There are also easy ways to make your bed and your bedroom more comfortable. The most important thing to change bad habits into good sleep habits is to create an optima sleep environment.

• Make sure your bed is comfortable. Different types of mattresses help with different issues. In addition, try therapeutic-shaped pillows that cradle your neck as well as pillows that help you sleep on your side.

• Ensure your bedroom remains a place for sleeping. Don’t use your bed for paying bills, doing work, etc. Help your body recognize that this is a place for rest/ intimacy. So take the television out as well as the computer.

• Keep your bedroom comfortable and peaceful. Make sure your room is well ventilated and the temperature is consistent, and keep it quiet. If you have a problem with outside noise, a fan or a “white noise” machine can help block it out. Gentle, slow music is another remedy that can help to improve sleep without medication.

• Hide your clock or place your clock so you can’t see the time when you are in bed.

There are also some habits you should develop during the day to help with night sleep.

• No naps during the day. If you are feeling especially tired and feel as if you absolutely must nap, sleep for less than 30 minutes, early in the day.

• Limit caffeine and alcohol. Especially avoid alcoholic beverages or caffeinated drinks for several hours before bedtime.

• Stop smoking as nicotine is a stimulant and will make it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep.

• Get exposure to bright light/sunlight after awakening. This will regulate your body’s biological clock. Also, try to keep your bedroom dark while you are sleeping.

• Exercise early in the day. Exercise every day can help you sleep but be sure to exercise in the morning or afternoon.

• In women, iron deficiency tends to cause problems sleeping, so if your blood is iron deprived, a vitamin with extra iron or an iron supplement might help.

Sleeping machines are really a marvel of new technology. There are ones that have all the rain sounds as well as waves on the beach and the sounds of waterfalls, included with AM/FM radio, coupled with a CD player for your relaxation techniques. When I worked the night shift, I started using one to block out outside daytime noises, and 20 years later, I am still use it. In fact, can’t go to sleep without it. I highly recommend for you to add one of these machines to your sleep environment.

Sleeplessness as defined in the dictionary is just another word that is often used for intermittent insomnia. Intermittent sleeplessness refers to those occasional nights when you have trouble falling asleep, or turn and toss all night long. This lack of quality sleep can affect you the next day with trouble concentrating, daytime drowsiness, and that feeling of just not being rested or refreshed — feeling as if you just need a good nap.

Human beings and other animals as well as plants, have internal biological rhythms. These rhythms are controlled by a biological clock and work on a daily time scale. This biological clock affects everything including alertness, body temperature, hormone release, appetite, and most importantly, the timing of sleep. If there is anything which disturbs this timing then a person can have a night of sleeplessness or restless sleep. Drinking too much caffeine, minor aches and pains, smoking, being too cold or too hot – all can for the time being cause insomnia. Jet lag often causes sleeplessness for many business people as can worry over a problem from home or work.

A couple of nights of sleeplessness can make you feel tired and unable to concentrate the next day. But please realize that as long as insomnia does not happen every night, it rarely the type of insomnia that can cause serious problems. Also, a life-threatening health problem is rarely the cause of short-term troubles with sleep. But since insomnia is often a symptom of numerous illnesses and medical issues, it is important that if this type of insomnia continues for two weeks, you should consult your family physician.

Here are several guidelines that can help with sleeplessness or insomnia. Begin going to bed and getting up at the same time everyday. Never eat a large meal before going to bed. Never do taxing exercising in the several hours before bedtime as exercise wakes the body up.

Worry or stress should be turned off at bedtime. A good tip for doing that can be to do a visualization exercise such as the following: If you work with computers, imagine entering your problems or the cause of your stress into the computer into a document, then save the problems on the hard drive, just as you would do at work. Then visualize turning your computer off for the night and closing the office door. Sounds rather stupid doesn’t it but guess what — it works!

Sleeplessness is most often just a short-lived experience, with one or two nights of sleeplessness, and then a person returns to normal sleep. But always remember that if it continues for more than 2 weeks — make an appointment to see your family physician.

Sleep disorders have become a medical subspecialty, and there are doctors who now specialize in sleep medicine. Sleep doctors are able to detect and treat both common and rare sleep disorders. Some common sleep disorders are insomnia, jet lag, sleepwalking, snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

It is vital to make sure that your child gets enough sleep and that the child also sleeps well. A tired child may start having development or behavior problems. A child’s sleep problems can cause unnecessary stress for the entire family. Experts recommend the following hours of sleep for children:

•	Infants (3 to 11 months): 14 to 15 hours
•	Toddlers: 12 to 14 hours
•	Preschoolers: 11 to 13 hours
•	School-age children: 10 to 11 hours

If your child has any of these problems with sleep, they could be on the way to a chronic sleep disorder. The problems are, a parent having to spend too much time helping the child fall asleep; the child waking up repeatedly during the night; snoring very loudly or struggling to breathe during the night; or behavior, mood or school performance changes. When this is a problem for more than several weeks, take your child to a pediatrician or a sleep specialist. Your doctor may suggest that your child spend a night or a nap period in a sleep center so their sleep cycle can be studied and also to help diagnose any medical problems.

The stress and pressure of a job, demands so much of a man’s time that it often doesn’t leave much room for sleep. The body wants to rest, but man can not stop the mind from spinning during the night. So, many men do not get much sleep on a regular basis. The following are signs that a man may not be getting enough sleep or have already developed a sleep disorder. They include being unable to pay attention during meetings, having to use an alarm clock to wake up on time every morning or just not feeling well.

As the sleep problems gets worse, depression can begin to disrupt the quality of a man’s sleep. As poor sleep continues, men stop taking care of their bodies in many ways. They stop eating or exercising regularly. They are likely to abuse alcohol and drugs. Statistics show men are four times as likely as women to kill themselves. So if a man experiences sleep problems that last more than two weeks, they also should visit a sleep expert or family physician.

Experts suggest that most men as well as women need around seven to eight hours of sleep every night. Women seem to sleep more than men, going to bed earlier with little problems falling asleep. A woman’s sleep also seems to be much lighter and easily disturbed.

There are many factors that affect how a woman sleeps. Most of these factors change over time. As an example, daytime sleepiness is most common in women when they are in their 20s and 30s, while older women appear to have little or no problems adjusting to periods of sleep loss. This difference has been attributed to the many commitments that a young woman may have. In particular are working mothers, who must balance career, family, friends and personal health needs.

Sleeping disorders affect millions of women. Many problems remain undiagnosed and therefore untreated. There are close to over 80 sleep disorders that can affect women, with the causes being different by age and hormone factors.

Sleep deprivation can result in at least 50 or more serious sleep disorders. The symptoms of sleep deprivation are many and varied. Serious and even fatal medical problems can be caused by lack of sleep.

A few of these symptoms can be aching muscles, clinical depression, decreased mental activity and concentration. Furthermore severe sleep deprivation can cause symptoms of
depersonalization, weakened immune system, hallucinations, hypertension, psychosis-like symptoms, slowed reaction time, slurred speech, symptoms similar to: Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and alcoholic intoxication.

Now, go back and read the above paragraph one more time and perhaps you can understand the seriousness of going without sleep.

With a mobile society and millions of cars and trucks on the road, the fact that sleep deprivation causes such profound affects on a person’s reaction time and could be the most serious symptom. Why? — because you are not only affecting your life but you could be the cause of a fatal auto accident.

In a study that was published in 2000 in the British Medical Journal, research done in Australia and New Zealand showed that sleep deprivation could be as bad as being drunk. Those who drive after being awake for 17-19 hours perform tasks worse than other subjects with blood alcohol totals of .05 percent.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported that around 100,000 traffic accidents during a year in the USA alone are directly caused by fatigue and drowsiness.

Another study done in 1996 at the University of Chicago Medical Center demonstrated that severely sleep deprivated people affects the body’s ability to metabolize glucose leading to early-stage type 2 Diabetes.

A study done in 2001 linked sleep deprivation to several very serious diseases, among them heart disease, mental illnesses, bipolar disorder as well as psychosis.

Sleep deprivation is considered torture in most countries and has become the subject of debate in the United States. It is being used as an interrogation technique by coalition forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. Interrogation subjects are kept awake for several days then are allowed to fall asleep. They are then suddenly awakened to be questioned. By this time a haze has formed in the mind of the prisoner. His spirit is wearied, his legs unsteady and he has only one desire and that is to sleep. Anyone who has experienced this desire knows that not even hunger and thirst can compare to it.

A sleep apnea patient may believe that his only problem is insomnia; when actually the problem of insomnia is a symptom of the primary problem of sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is the constant stopping of breathing during sleep. If a person sleeps alone, they probably will not know that this is happening but if they have a sleep partner, the bedmate may notice the silence, followed by choking or gasping to get air into the lungs. Every time that apnea happens during the night, normal sleep pattern is interrupted and that causes the symptoms of insomnia.

People with sleep apnea wake up before they go through the normal amount of slow wave sleep (stages 3 and 4 of non-REM sleep) also called delta sleep. These stages are the deepest stages of sleep and are the periods when researchers believe, the brain, muscle tissues, cardiovascular and hormone systems, restore or repair themselves from damage occurring during the day.

Insomnia that goes on for more than a period of two weeks, can cause many symptoms — daytime sleepiness, falling asleep at inappropriate times (such as while driving or at work), waking up feeling un-refreshed in the morning after what seems to them to have been a full night’s sleep. The longer the insomnia last, the worse the symptoms of chronic insomnia become. A person may start experiencing memory problems, learning difficulties and depression.

If the insomnia is caused by sleep apnea, the symptoms will continue to get worse. The person may even have personality changes, loud snoring, rapid weight gain, sweating during the night, and waking up with a headache. If a person experiences any of these symptoms and has had insomnia for over a time of more than two weeks, it is important that they make an appointment to visit with their physician for a medical checkup.

Please note that not every snorer has sleep apnea. Sleep apnea happens more often in people who are overweight, but thin people can have it. People with sleep apnea most often don’t know it, mostly because they don’t know they are having problems breathing while sleeping. But, they will eventually notice the physical symptoms of insomnia.

If a person truly has insomnia caused by sleep apnea, the physician will probably find that the patient has, or is bordering on, high blood pressure and will need to test the patient for diabetes, heart trouble, and may even have the person go to a sleep center, where sleep can be monitored for a night. Sleep studies have shown that a person with severe sleep apnea may stop breathing hundreds of times a night, for a few seconds to as long as 10 minutes; but this is usually only in the more severe cases.

After reviewing all tests, the doctor will be able to tell if the sleep problems are true sleep apnea or if the insomnia is being caused by another medical problem.

The majority of times, a person with a slight case of sleep apnea can be helped with natural sleep aids or medications for the underlying medical problems. Or, they may just need to make some lifestyle changes such as not smoking, losing weight or getting more exercise. If the sleep apnea is more severe and has made a severe impact, or caused significant medical problems — the doctor will need to treat both the medical condition, and the sleep problems. For severe sleep apnea caused by airway obstruction, there are several treatments; including a device that can be used at night, as well as sleep apnea surgery to reduce or remove any obstructions.

Sleep apnea left untreated can increase the odds of heart attacks, strokes and cause high blood pressure. It can also increase a person’s risk of diabetes as well as increasing the risk for work-related injury, and accidents while driving. So, it is most important that a person with long term, chronic insomnia, see a doctor as quickly as possible.

Music in the background is an excellent way to relax especially if you suffer from a sleeping problem such as insomnia.

Insomnia is considered a sleep disorder and is recognized by continual problems falling asleep, staying asleep or sleeping for several hours then waking up and being unable to get back to sleep. It is usually followed by impairment of some functions while awake. Organic and non-organic insomnia both comprise a sleep disorder

Insomnia can often be caused by another disorder, by changes in the sleeping environment, by the timing of sleep, or by stress. Researchers do not know exactly why people need sleep, but researchers do believe that that lack of sleep can be fatal. Humans who are prevented from sleeping for long periods develop other mental problems and can cause hallucinations.

If sleep time isn’t a good time for you, talk to your doctor or healthcare professional about your options. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) was organized to make sure that the increase in people with sleeping problems can get the very best in medical care. Sleep medicine is a new and recognized medical subspecialty. Physicians who specialize in sleep medicine help people who have trouble sleeping well. Sleep doctors are able to diagnosis and treat both rare and common sleep disorders. Some common sleep disorders are insomnia, sleepwalking, jet lag, snoring and sleep apnea.

Your physician will suggest trying to get to sleep by changing sleep habits to good from bad. These include reducing stress using relaxation techniques or visualization, making lifestyle changes such as no caffeine, not smoking no daytime naps, and getting more light during the day. Other natural or best sleeping aids are changing to a healthier diet and starting an exercise program. A healthy body is better able to have no problems sleeping

Soft music playing in the background is also a way to help you relax and fall sleep. Or you may find that using one of the “white noise” machine that plays the sound of a summer rain storm, or a waterfall, can be a help.

But if these natural tips to help with sleep do not solve your insomnia, and your sleep problem continues for two or more weeks, you should visit with a sleep specialist or your family physician since sleep disorders can be symptoms of other and more serious medical conditions.

But try soft music while soaking in a warm bath first. You might be surprised how much that will help especially if you add a warm glass of milk.

Melatonin is a natural sleep aid that might help you if you suffer a sleep disorder.

A sleep disorder is any disruption in the sleep patterns of an individual. While most sleep disorders leave you feeling tired or unrested, a number of symptoms are more severe including excessive sleepiness, snoring, trouble going to asleep at normal sleep times and problems such as restless-leg-syndrome.

If you suspect that you are not getting enough sleep or that you might have a sleep disorder, speak to your primary physician or a sleep specialist. If your health care professional feels that you may have a sleep disorder he may want you to keep a sleep diary, or he may even have you stay overnight at a sleep center for testing.

Some individuals with sleep problems find that they experience temporary relief when they sleep on the side, rather than the back. Irregular sleep hours can throw off your sleep cycle and can even lead to breathing problems during the most important sleep stages. It is also helpful to lose weight, reduce use of alcohol, tobacco and sedatives. And the most important sleep tip is to establish a regular sleep routine.

You can also soak in a warm bath, drink a glass of warm milk, listen to soft music and have an inviting sleeping area that is comfortable to you and is the room you feel most comfortable in.

There are several other-the-counter (OTC) sleep aids that have helped many with their insomnia but as with any other medication, there are also side effects. A small child can be helped with occasional insomnia, by taking a low-dose aspirin, but there are many people who are allergic to aspirins, so caution should be taken.

Other well advertized OTC sleep aids such as Nytol or Sominex, can also be tried by adults but, again, a person should discuss with their primary doctor before taking any of these sleep aids if the person suffers from and is being treated for depression, or other mental health problems and especially patients who are being treated for Parkinson’s disease. Most of the OTC medications contain antihistamines that can cause some side effects such as dry mouth, and extreme drowsiness.

Melatonin is a sleep aid to help people fall asleep – especially helpful for people who suffer from the insomnia caused by international travel or working the night shift. It is a hormone occurring in the body when serotonin, which is another natural hormone, is exposed to a decrease in light. It has side effects and most of the literature recommends it not being used by people with depression, autoimmune diseases, schizophrenia, or other severe illnesses. Pregnant and women who are nursing and children should not use melatonin.

Since melatonin is a natural hormone, then it is probably the first over the counter sleep aid that you should try.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by problems in a person’s sleeping patterns and affects people differently. Some people have troubles falling asleep and this is known by most medical professionals as “sleep on-set insomnia”. Others fall asleep easily then wake up after only a few hours of sleeping and then have problems going back to sleep. And then others fall asleep with no problems, but their sleep pattern does not go thru the entire sleep cycle. This is known as “sleep maintenance” insomnia.

To best understand common sleep disorders and the effects of lack of good sleep on a person’s body, we must first learn more about sleep and get a better understanding of why sleep is so necessary to a healthy life.

Sleep is when the body seems to repair the damage that happens while awake. The study of sleep is relatively new and what sleep does for the body is not totally understood. But it is know that people can go longer without food than without sleep. In studies with mice deprived of sleep vs mice deprived of food, the sleep deprived mice get sick and die quicker than the unfed mice.

Sleep studies have revealed that there are five stages of sleep. Stage 1 is a very light sleep when all body systems begin slowing down but the person can still be easily wakened. Stage 2 is a period where eye movement stop and brain waves begin to slow down. In stage 3 sleep, brain function slows down even more and the slowest brain waves, known as delta waves, periodically appear. In stage 4, the waves are nearly all delta waves. Stages 3 and 4 are known as “deep sleep” and it is difficult to wake a person during stage 4.

Stage 5 is called REM sleep and during this stage all changes. Breathing becomes faster, there are ‘rapid eye movements”; and this is the stage where people dream. Scientists believe that good, restorative sleep happens only when a person goes through four to five complete cycles during a sleeping period.

Deficiency of sleep first affects the brain, so the theory is that the brain needs to rest so to recharge and to reorganize data and also needs to purge itself of waste products created while awake. Studies with subjects kept awake for days, show that the subjects begin to have mental symptoms first, such as inability to concentrate, hallucinations, and problems with memory.

During sleep, researchers have also found that metabolic rates and energy consumption are reduced. The cardiovascular system slows down during sleep as blood pressure and heart rates begin to drop. Chemicals are replaced and muscles are restored and in children, growth hormones are released.

So, with so many functions in the body affected by sleep, it becomes easy to understand why insomnia can be an extreme problem. According to the United States Dept of Health & Human Services over 63.5 million Americans suffer from insomnia during a year. It also seems to occur 1.4 times more commonly in women than in men.

Often insomnia is actually a secondary symptom of a primary medical illness such as depression, heart disease, chronic stress or anxiety, sleep apnea, diabetes or menopause ; so it’s important to see your primary care physician if you are having trouble sleeping.

If insomnia only occurs time to time, it is commonly referred to as intermittent insomnia. This is the type of insomnia that occurs when a person is travels often or is worrying about a transitory problem. When insomnia continues for over six months it is known as “acute” insomnia. But the problem is insomnia which last from months to years and is known as chronic insomnia. Key health problems caused by chronic insomnia from obesity to fibromyalgia and to many that can even be fatal. Experts believe that chronic insomnia has a greater mortality rate than high blood pressure, smoking, and heart disease.

Researchers, who work in the area of sleep, do not know why humans need sleep, but they do know that lack of sleep can kill a person. People who go without sleep for long periods of time will begin hallucinating and can develop mental problems.

Insomnia is considered a disorder of chronic problems falling asleep, problems staying asleep or sleeping for only several hours then waking up and not being able to fall back to sleep. It is usually followed by impairment of function while awake.

Insomnia can be caused by other disorders, changes in where a person sleeps, or by stress. The problems caused by insomnia are sleepiness and psychomotor performance which are similar to sleep deprivation.

Ambien is a prescription medication and called a sedative or a hypnotic. It affects certain chemicals in the brain that have probably become unbalanced and cause sleep problems (insomnia). Ambien is indicated for the treatment of insomnia. Ambien promotes relaxation to help a person fall asleep and stay asleep. It is extremely popular with most of the medical community and is believed to be very safe because it does not stay in the body very long – it has a short half life.

Ambien may cause a severe allergy reaction. Stop taking this medication immediately and get emergency medical assistance if you develop hives, have problems breathing, have swelling of the face. Never take this medication during normal waking hours, unless you have a full 7 to 8 hours to devote to sleeping.

When I was prescribed with Ambien CR (Time Released), I noticed that I was sleepy for much more than 8 hours and I also began to have trouble with my breathing when doing any type of exercise. My kids and I figured out when I was first prescribed Ambien CR and when I first noticed the problems breathing, so at my next visit to my doctor, I asked to be put back on just plain Ambien. In about two weeks all my breathing problems were gone. I have since noticed that they have added on their television ads trouble breathing as a side effect.

I have taken Ambien for several years and my doctor does not seem to be concerned, so for a sleep disorder it can be taken as long as needed to get the sleep disorder reset. Since my sleep problems started from working nightshift, it may take years to get right again for me.

The product inserts with Ambien suggest that it should not be taken more than 5 weeks or as long as your doctor tells you to.

So, how long can a person take Ambien for a sleep disorder? As long as your doctor tells you too as it is a prescribed medication.
